Prof Smith is an academic anaesthetist and hyperbaric medicine consultant. He joined Stace in 2025 following his return to Adelaide after 20 years in the UK.

Training & Experience
Tom studied medicine at the University of Adelaide and went on to early hospital training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He moved to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, where he completed a doctorate in physiology and undertook specialist anaesthetic training in combination with his academic career at the University of Oxford. During this time Tom also spent a year working as a flying doctor in aeromedical critical care in Europe and in South Australia with MedSTAR. He finished his training with a fellowship in vascular anaesthesia at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and joined Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Anaesthesia as a consultant anaesthetist. From there Tom moved to London to take up a clinical academic post at King’s College London in combination with a consultant appointment in anaesthetics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, where he developed particular experience in anaesthesia for major urological surgery. Prior to relocating to Adelaide in 2024 he was Professor of Aerospace Medicine at King’s College London and Macintosh Professor at the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
